  7. My personal take on the David Copperfield Special... One Trick at a Time.

  9. These are not the definitive answers, they are just my 
  10. subjective observations and deduction. Do with them what you 
  11. will, but please e-mail me if you see a flaw in my logic.

  14. The Orient Express:
  15.  
  16. My Theory:
  17.  
  18. The train car goes through a trap door in the floor. The sheet 
  19. is held by a collapsible wire framework which collapses when 
  20. pulled from the middle.
  21.  
  22. Indicators:
  23.  
  24. The floor under the train in the opening shots has been damped 
  25. down to give a nice reflective sheen. This section of floor is 
  26. seen to be dry when the sheet is removed. Plus, how else COULD 
  27. it be done?
  28.  
  29. All in all, VERY nicely done.

  31.  
  32. Fire Spikes:
  33.  
  34. No illusion, except the ropes that burn through only when HE 
  35. wants them to. In fact if you freeze frame the bit where the 
  36. last rope burns through, you can see what looks suspiciously 
  37. like some form of U-bolt on the end of the rope.

  40. Graffiti Wall:

  42. My Theory:

  44. The picture is drawn by someone behind the scenes viewing a tv 
  45. monitor and is then handed to D.C. after he is finished drawing.         
  46.  
  47. Indicators:
  48.  
  49. When he removes the envelope from the clip and picks up the 
  50. knife from the wall, he places the envelope flat against the 
  51. edge of the wall and then removes it, giving him the chance to 
  52. be handed a piece of paper which he then places behind the 
  53. envelope. When the envelope is opened, you can see that he 
  54. reaches *behind* it to pull out the picture. Also, the one he 
  55. pulls out of the envelope before is folded-edge down and the 
  56. one after is folded-edge up. Finally the drawings we can see 
  57. through the paper at the beginning do not match any part of 
  58. the tiger we can see through the same part of the paper 
  59. afterwards.

  62. Swapping Places:

  64. My Theory:

  66. Twins in the floating thingy, black sheet under table to 
  67. hide D.C. after being placed in floating thingy and to conceal 
  68. girl after D.C. re-appears.

  70. Indicators:

  72. Before trick begins, we can see lights under the table. For 
  73. the whole rest of the trick, not ONE light is seen under the 
  74. middle of the table. In fact you can see one light appear as 
  75. if it can only be seen between the edge of the black sheet and 
  76. the leg of the table.

  79. Appearing Girls:

  81. Trap door a la Orient Express. Note the moving handlebars.

  86. He's in the base. Damned if I know how he fits. Note shadow of 
  87. opened trap-door on right side of lift as shadow descends.

  92. He undoes the chains and moves to the front (you can see him 
  93. pushing out the fabric.

  96. Sword Impalement:

  98. Trick sword linked to body harness. Note how sword above body 
  99. appears suddenly almost as if it were folded out of his clothes.

  102. Shrinking Box:

  104. He's in the table with only hands and head appearing through. 
  105. Feet move very mechanically and appear out of box together 
  106. while ONE of his knees is still visible above the edge of the 
  107. box.

  110. Appearing Motorcycle:

  112. D.C. and bike are hidden behind box. Note 2 tracks for 
  113. wheeling bike and D.C. forward.

  116. Niagra Falls:

  118. Not having seen the whole stunt, I have no idea how he removes 
  119. himself from the raft, but remove himself he did.  Notice when 
  120. he appears on the helicopter, he is wearing different clothes 
  121. and he is COMPLETELY dry!!!

  124. Disappearing Girl:

  126. A combination of a black sheet, some careful lighting and a 
  127. second girl hidden in the base of the box/table.

  130. "This Pyramid Sucks!!":

  132. Look carefully at the pyramid base/table thickness. Plenty of 
  133. room to hide a master illusionist!!
  134.  
  135.  
  136. Water Torture/Falling Blade:

  138. You can see D.C. outside the front of the tank when the blade 
  139. falls and blows the curtain upwards.

  141.  
  142. Travelling Head:

  144. Girl leans head backwards and has identical twin hidden behind 
  145. the other box which has some form of forced perspective/mirror 
  146. trick. (Note the bars go back a fair way as seen at the very 
  147. beginning of the trick.

  150. Disappearing Motorcycle:
  151.  
  152. Black sheet over the top section of the gantry and smoke to 
  153. obscure the top of the rider/bike. Note disappearance of track 
  154. which bike rides into at beginning. Remaining piece of metal 
  155. is too thin. Needless to say, rider ISN'T D.C.

  158. Floating Glitterball:

  160. Look closely for two wires at 45 degree angles.

  163. Appearing Lady:

  165. Clever lighting. 'nuff said.

  168. Disappearing Plane:

  172. The plane was slid out the back of the enclosure and the 
  173. 'silhouette' was actually a design contained WITHIN the front 
  174. screens. The onlookers were in on the gag.

  176. Indicators:

  178. Damned if I can find any, but that the only way I can see to 
  179. do it.

  181.  
  182. Sawn In Half:

  184. My Theory:

  186. There is a contortionist bent over inside the table to play 
  187. the legs. D.C. plays the upper half, also bent over.
  188.  
  189. Indicators:

  191. When they are applying the neck-lock to him, he leans up and 
  192. you can see where he disappears into the table. Even though a 
  193. sizeable section of his shirt is supposedly removed, it is 
  194. back at full length at the end of the trick.

  197. Water Levitation

  199. My Theory:

  201. Some form of support from below, possible a seat for her to 
  202. sit on.
  203.  
  204. Indicators:
  205.  
  206. Sometimes, you can see something support her backside. Combine 
  207. black background, his black pants and a highly directional 
  208. lighting scheme and it shouldn't be too difficult to hide a 
  209. support of some kind.

  212. Statue of Liberty:

  214. My Theory:

  216. Damn, this guy is GOOD!!! In the section we are shown, I can't 
  217. pick it except to say that the ring of lights looks distinctly
  218. different without the statue as opposed to with it. For 
  219. instance, where is the hole in the ring we see with the 
  220. statue, after it disappears?

  223. Floating Ball of Paper:

  225. A wire from his lapel to the edge of the aisle. Ball always 
  226. stays same distance from lapel. A magician's classic.

  229. Cigarette and Coin:

  231. Look carefully and you can see the edge of the spring-loaded 
  232. hole in the centre of the coin.

  235. Ring and Sneaker:

  237. Ring is secreted into sleeve and placed on sneaker at some 
  238. point. They cheat by not showing us the whole trick.

  241. Torn Card:

  243. Card appears outside window while other thrown cards are 
  244. concealing our view. Card palmed from deck and passed to 
  245. assistant outside train(!!)

  247. Ring and Rose:

  249. I don't see how it was done, but they didn't show the whole 
  250. trick again.

  253. Matches:

  255. Time-release chemicals.

  258. Rubber Bands:

  260. Watch VERY CAREFULLY when he pulls and twists. You can just 
  261. see him unhooking finger, and rehooking on the other side of 
  262. the bands.

  265. Light Bulb:

  267. Metal wires and contacts on the two "Glass" rods.

  270. Pearls from Thin Air:

  272. Pearl is on a flip-up rig behind his thumb. Necklace is hidden

  322. Check the side thickness of the apparatus and the fact he is 
  323. flat against both the front and back. See also height of

  327. Look!! You Can Take Part at Home!!

  329. Simple Aritmetic.
  330.

  332. Great Wall of China:
  333.  
  334. My Theory:
  335.  
  336. D.C. appears to walk into wall while secreting himself in the 
  337. base of the pedestal. He then climbs over the wall while the 
  338. camera is working it's way across and hides in the other 
  339. pedestal, only to reappear at the appropriate time. The crowd
  340. is in on the gag.
  341.  
  342. Indicators:
  343.  
  344. In the scenes at the beginning explaining the camera, you can 
  345. see a ladder on the wall in the background on the end side. 
  346. The heart monitor is fake, you can see just as the CRT fades 
  347. off the screen, the beeps and blips no longer match!! There is 
  348. only 40 seconds from when we lose sight of one pedestal until 
  349. we see the other one, but then they pull in tight on the 
  350. pedestal and he could concieveably slip in underneath it 
  351. unseen. This would give him a maximum 1 minute 20 seconds. The 
  352. two guys holding the sheet are manipulating it themselves, you 
  353. can see that their arms are behind it pushing against it. While 
  354. they are pulling down the screens at the end, you can just see 
  355. the extension under the pedestal that makes it large enough for 
  356. D.C. to hide inside.
  357.  
  358.  
  359. Exploding Building:
  360.  
  361. My all-time fave D.C. illusion. This one always leaves people 
  362. saying "How the HELL did he do that!?"
  363.  
  364. My Theory:
  365.  
  366. D.C. leaves the safe as soon as the camera leaves the room and 
  367. gets out of the building by another exit. He may be one of the 
  368. workmen running away from the building behind the camera. He 
  369. then secreted himself so that he is hidden by the steel plate 
  370. from the camera until a wire connected to the orange sheet is 
  371. pulled, making him appear to rise out of the plate. He then 
  372. slips in the back and pulls the orange sheet away. The crowd 
  373. is in on the gag.

  375. Indicators:
  376.  
  377. The picture on the remote control camera and the real one do 
  378. not match. The chain over the safe is in a slightly different 
  379. position. Look where it is in relation to the combination 
  380. dial. The R.C. camera is therefore pre-recorded. Also, if you 
  381. watch carefully you can deduce the safe is at the right-hand 
  382. end of the building, but the R.C. camera dies when the 
  383. left-hand end of the building starts to go. I can't prove or 
  384. disprove the bit about the wire and the orange sheet, bit I 
  385. can see no other way it could be done.

  388. Flight:
  389.  
  390. Wires. It's got to be wires. Contrary to popular belief, you 
  391. CAN see the wires in this segment, it's just that the 
  392. background and lighting have been selected so that the wires 
  393. blend right in with them. The background, with it's frequent 
  394. vertical line relections, hides any reflections from the wires 
  395. and the floor, with hundreds of pinpoints of light 
  396. illuminating it, hides any reflections that might be picked up 
  397. there. If you want to see a wire, look at the segment just 
  398. after he releases the hawk, as he is leaning back. Above his 
  399. left shoulder, you can see one of the aforementioned pinpoints 
  400. of light, and above it a reflection from the wire. The wires 
  401. are obviously controlled by a mechanical movement system, to 
  402. get the movement so free-ranging and smooth. They may even 
  403. be computer controlled. Getting onto the rings, the following 
  404. pieces of ASCII art will show you how the wires are missed:

  435. With the box, look carefully in the middle each side of the 
  436. lid, you can see small sections where the wires can pass 
  437. through. They also make sure that the lid is passed through 
  438. the middle of the wires.

  442. Well, that's it. I hope you enjoyed it. It was about 4 hours of 
  443. my life, but I think it's worth it. 
  444.  
  445. To finish, I would just like to say that I STILL think D.C. 
  446. is the world's foremost proponent of "Big Magic". I can't wait 
  447. for next year's special!! (rumour says he's going to walk on 
  448. water in the middle of N.Y. Harbour.)
